Par Beach and Plastic Debris
Nick Biber, a PhD student at the School of Marine Science and Engineering, Plymouth University, has been heading up the study to establish whether there is a significant difference between the debris load on Par Beach in comparison to other beaches within and outside St Austell Bay. This work was possible as it was funded by one of the community research grants Friends of Par Beach were awarded. He will be making a presentation of his findings and trying to answer questions such as Why does Par Beach get so much? and Where does it come from? Come along to find out more....

How? Just turn up. Over 16s please (16-18s must be accompanied by an adult). Please wear tough gloves and heavy duty boots and be prepared for adverse weather.


22nd March 2012 (Thursday)
Quiz night with David Stevens, with raffle
Friends of Par Beach have been fortunate in getting David Stevens to run another Quiz Night for us. David is well known in the area for his entertaining quiz nights and our each one we've held with him has been a full house.

As well as the quiz there will be a raffle for prizes and the chance to win a bottle of whisky in the ‘heads and tails’ game – just £1 to enter.

Maximum of 6 people per team, no age restriction.

Charge is just £4 per person, which covers a cocktail pasty, tea, coffee and squash. There will not be a licensed bar, but you are welcome to bring your own drinks if you wish. It will be another fun night, so in order to avoid disappointment it is recommended (but not compulsory) to book a table in advance.
When? 7:30pm start

Cost? £4 per person (this includes a small pasty and a soft drink). Bring your own drinks if you would like to.

Spring Bird Walk with Matt Ward
A guided spring walk by local bird expert, Matt Ward, around Par Beach and its Nature Reserve looking at the birds that reside or may be passing through. There many habits which bring a large variety of birds to the area. There are reed beds, pond, streams, dunes, beach, meadow and small woodland to observe. This is a family event, children & well behaved dogs on leads are welcome. It will be wheelchair friendly for most of the walk.

Where? Meet in the main Par Beach car park
Cost? Free for members of Friends of Par Beach - bring your membership cards, £2 each for all non members.
How? Just turn up. Please wear weather appropriate clothing.


1st July 2012 (Sunday)
Wild Flower Walk on Par Beach
Friends of Par Beach and Friends of Luxulyan Valley (FoLV) have joined forces to run a wildflower walk on Par Beach with Ian Bennallick.

We are pleased that Ian has agreed to come along to pass on his wealth of expertise. Ian is involved with ERCCIS (Environmental Records Centre for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly) and is the BSBI (Botanical Society for the British Isles) recorder for East Cornwall. He also leads the Cornwall Botanical Group, runs botanical workshops for the Cornwall Wildlife Trust and leads botanical tours abroad for the company Greentours. It is envisaged that the walk will last for the morning but may be extended in to the afternoon.
This is a family event, children & well behaved dogs on leads are welcome.

When? 10am, Sunday 1st July
Where? Meet at the Par Beach main car park
Cost? Free for members of Friends of Par Beach and Friends of Luxulyan Valley - bring your membership cards, £2 each for all non members.

5th August 2012 (Sunday)
Seashore Discoveries on Par Beach
The Fowey VMCA joins forces with Friends of Par Beach for a fun, family event with scavenger hunting and beach sculpture competitions.

When? 1pm to 3pm
Where? Meet in the main beach car park
Cost? Free
How? Please wear sensible footwear and clothing.
