18th September 2010 (Saturday)
Beach Clean for Marine Conservation Society
In aid of Beachwatch Big Weekend by the Marine Conservation Society we will be holding another litter pick.

Marine wildlife gets entangled in litter and accidentally ingests it, seabirds mistake floating plastic litter for food. Litter comes from many sources but it is all preventable.

Please come along and help clean our beach!
Bring some gloves and your friends and we will supply bags, help and encouragement.
We'll be recycling what we can and recording what types of litter we find.

When? 10:30am for an hour or two
Where? Meet in the main Par Beach car park (PL24 2AS)
Cost? Free
How? You must wear thick gloves for protection and you should wear weather appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. Under 18s must be accompanied by parent/guardian/responsible adult. We will supply bags and we have a limited number of litter pick sticks to loan out for the litter pick duration (first come, first served!).

w/c 11th October 2010 (final date weather forecast dependant)
Starry Nights - astronomy with Brian Sheen
It proved so popular in April and we are very lucky to be offered another evening with Brian Sheen, a member of the Royal Astronomical Society who will point out to us how the night sky works.

Brian will use a Sky Scout (small loud speaker system) to help us identify individual stars and galaxies, he'll tell us about constellation legends, stories and even urban myths. You'll be able to ask him whatever you want on the subject of astronomy too so feel free to come armed with questions.

There will be two pairs of giant binoculars and perhaps three telescopes to share but feel free to bring your own.

When? An evening between 11th and 15th October. We will announce the date close to the week as it will be weather forecast dependant

Where? Picnic spot by the side of Par Beach main car park

In the event of inclement weather we have a backup plan!
We will meet in Gott Hall instead, where the night sky will be projected on a screen and Brian will tell us about the night sky from in the dry. We will see real meteorites, hear part of the space story, parts of Cornwalls astronomical heritage and more. If we need to use Gott Hall we will use all radio media we can, this website, facebook, and posters to inform you of this. Someone will be at the beach car park on the night to redirect you should you arrive there when you need to be at Gott Hall instead.
Last time we had to move the event indoors but still managed to play with a couple of telescopes outside behind Gott Hall.

How? You should dress appropriately for the weather, wrap up warm because we plan to be outside. You will need to purchase your ticket in advance.

Cost? A VERY special price of £3 per ticket for FoPB members. Non members £5 per ticket.
Places are limited so you must purchase your ticket(s) in advance.
Tickets will be available to purchase
from Par Post Office once the date has been announced. Please provide your membership card(s) on purchasing or you will not get the discounted price.

Ticket prices summary:
