Friends of Par Beach have joined forces with the Opal Project and will be holding a Fungi and Lichen Survey event. This is aimed at children and is a family event.

Dr Owen Smith will guide you through OPAL’s Explore Nature pack to identify fungi and lichens and explain how local air quality impacts on our natural environment.

To learn more about the OPAL Project see their website http://www.opalexplorenature.org/

This is a free event for all, but, as places are limited, you should register with Phil Gadd on 01726 817396.

Well behaved dogs on leads please (and owners!) most welcome

Meet by the statue at the far end of the beach road

Please wear appropriate clothing for the prevailing weather, it may be wet underfoot so sensible footware is recommended.

There is a growing feeling, partly initiated by the National Trust that a child who hasn't had the opportunity to get out into the natural environment to build dens, interact with the local flora and fauna etc is missing out on a great deal in their development and this event would be great opportunity for them.

Non FoPB Event - Friends of the Fowey Estuary Marine Litter and its effects on Seabirds
Thursday, 29th January 2015
Venue: Trenython Manor
Time: 19:30
Cost: Free

Friends of the Fowey Estuary are delighted to be hosting an evening of talks about the scale of Marine Litter and its effects on Seabirds on Thursday 29th January at 7.30pm at the Trenython Manor Hotel

There will be a talk by Claire Wallerstein from Rame Peninsula Beach Care, a group which has already done lots of work investigating marine litter in their area and are appealing for people to help make chains of bottle tops collected from the beach to raise awareness of the massive scale of plastic litter in our marine environment. The response so far has been great and with Cornwall's giant bottle top chain it will be impossible for the scale of this problem to go on being ignored.

The second talk will be by Alice Trevail who is investigating the effects marine plastics have on sea-birds, Northern Fulmars in particular; these oceanic birds live and feed at sea only returning to land to breed. Her project is collecting beached northern fulmars, and then dissecting them to look in their stomachs for plastic litter. In the English Channel, 99% of fulmars were found with plastic in their stomach, but we need to know more about the South West area where they breed.

We are very grateful to the Trenython Manor Hotel who have given us the use of their beautiful venue for free, we hope to be joined by other local conservation groups and get a chance to meet some new people. Everyone is welcome so feel free to pass on the information.

Attached is a poster if you have a place to display one or to forward on to others.

Hope to see you there

Any queries, feel free to call Claire 01726 833061

We shall be completing the tree planting started in December and also creating an additional clearing on the dunes by cutting down gorse that has got out of hand.

Meet by the gate to the Orchid Field and slipway. This is straight on towards the end of the access road as the road bears round to the left to the western car park where you can park if coming by car.

Please wear suitable clothing and footwear for the weather and work in hand (safety footwear would be best if you have any) and bring spades if you can.

Come for the whole morning or drop in to suit.

Under 18s must be with a responsible adult.

As an incentive there will hopefully be the usual refreshments for those taking part.
